They sometimes served as hired soldiers, or mercenaries, for them. In 1300, they wanted to start a city and since all the good land was taken, they had to take two swampy areas in Lake Texcoco. There, they built there city which they named Tenchtitlan. As the population grew, the Aztecs had to build islands called chinampas. They did it to make more room for other people. They started by ancoring wicker baskets in the shallow part of Lake Texcoco. They then filled the baskets with cut plants and mud from Lake Texcoco. Teh mud and vegitation were pileduntil they broke the surface of the water. Layer upon layer. The chinampas were later called "floating gardens" by the Europeans.
